Ground and Building Environmental Vibration Monitoring
Environmental vibration monitoring is crucial for assessing and managing the impact of vibrations on people, structures or equipment, on the ground and surrounding environment. Industries involving rail transport, construction, road works or demolition rely on this monitoring to protect people, neighbouring buildings, infrastructure, and sensitive equipment, while also ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
Measuring and Monitoring Ground Borne Vibration
Ground borne vibrations can originate from activities such as construction, mining, or heavy transportation, such as railways. If left unchecked, these vibrations can affect nearby structures, disrupt operations, and cause disturbance or annoyance to people living locally.
Ground borne vibration is measured using Vibration Meters or Seismographs which detect and record the intensity, duration, and frequency of seismic waves. These vibrations are measured in terms of Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) which is the speed at which particles in a medium within the ground (such as soil or rock) move in response to external forces or disturbances. Vibration Dose Value (VDV) is also used with respect to the effect of vibration on humans.
There are two types of sensors commonly used for environmental vibration, which are traditionally Accelerometers for VDV measurements and geophones for PPV although modern systems will sometimes use one of these and determine the other through on-board data processing.
Specialised equipment has also been developed to measure and record vibrations on buildings or structures, both externally and at ground level.
